After Hijab, Torn Jeans, T Shirts, “Revealing Dresses” Banned by Mumbai College

Mumbai: After banning the hijab on campus, the NG Acharya and DK Marathe College authorities in Mumbai have banned students from wearing torn jeans, t-shirts, and “revealing dresses” on its premises.

The Chembur Trombay Education Society’s NG Acharya and DK Marathe College has directed its students to wear a “formal and decent” dress while on campus.

As per the notice, male students are allowed to wear half shirt or full shirt and trouser. Girls can wear and Indian and western outfit. Students shall not wear any dress which reveals religion or shows cultural disparity. Jeans, t-shirts, revealing dresses and jerseys are not allowed, stated a notice at the college gate.

“Hijab, burka, naqab, stoles, caps and badges can be removed by going to common rooms on the ground floor and then only they can move throughout college campus,” the notice dated June 27, 2024, said.

Some students had approached the Bombay High Court when the authorities of the college banned hijab, naqab, burka, stoles, caps, and badges inside the premises. A division bench of the Bombay High Court denied to interfere in the decision taken by the college and dismissed the petition.
