Instead of Finger, Doctors Perform Surgery of Tongue of 4-Yr-Old in Kerala Hospital

Kozhikode: A four-year-old girl fell victim to serious medical negligence at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital in Kerala. She was brought to the hospital for surgery of her finger, but the doctor operated on her tongue by mistake.

Intervening in the matter, Health Minister Veena directed the Director of Medical Education to conduct an immediate investigation into the incident and submit a comprehensive report.

According to relatives of the child, she was brought to the hospital as she had a sixth finger on one hand, which doctors said could be removed through a minor surgery.

But when the girl came out of the operation theatre, her family members were surprised to find that the girl’s mouth was in plaster. When they checked her hand, they found that the sixth finger was still there.

When they contacted the concerned nurse, she informed that there was a problem with the tongue of the child, which was rectified by surgery.

As per the relatives of the child, soon the concerned doctor came and apologised for the mistake and said the sixth finger will be removed, and took the child away.

The family also said the hospital authorities should take responsibility if any adverse consequences arise for the child due to this procedure.
