Know Preventive Measures to Check Monkeypox Infection

Mpox, which has been declared as an international health emergency by the WHO is a viral infection. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus, which also includes the variola virus responsible for smallpox.

Mpox symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic rash that forms scabs. Mpox is generally less severe than smallpox. But it can cause severe complications in immunocompromised individuals.

Monkeypox virus usually spreads through close contact with an infected person’s respiratory secretions, skin lesions, or contaminated objects. It can also be transmitted from animals through bites, scratches, or contact with bodily fluids of infected animals, such as rodents and primates.

Precautions to Check Mpox Infection:

Good hygiene:

Regular handwashing with soap and water especially after handling animals or coming into contact with potentially infected individuals or objects.

Avoid contact with infected individuals

Avoid close physical contact with persons with symptoms of mpox, such as a rash or fever, until they have recovered

Handling of Pets, Other Animals:

Avoid contact with wild animals. Keep pets clean and healthy. If work with animals, use protective gear.

Vaccination:

The smallpox vaccine offers some protection against mpox.
