Odisha Govt Honours Saheed Rendo Majhi with Renamed Medical College in Kalahandi

Bhawanipatna: The government medical college in Kalahandi, Odisha, was officially renamed as the ‘Saheed Rendo Majhi Medical College and Hospital (SRMMCH) on Monday. This decision was made to honour the incredible contributions of Saheed Rendo Majhi, a revered tribal leader and prominent freedom fighter from Kalahandi.

Saheed Rendo Majhi played a pivotal role in the freedom struggle and dedicated his life to fighting for the rights and welfare of the people in this region. The State government decided to name the Government Medical College & Hospital in Bhawanipatna after him as a tribute to his selfless service and sacrifice.

The renaming of the medical college is part of the Odisha government’s initiative to establish quality healthcare infrastructure across the state. Currently, there are 10 Medical Colleges and Hospitals (MCHs) in Odisha, with an additional medical college in Kalahandi scheduled to begin operations in the current academic year.

On April 11, 2023, the National Medical Commission (NMC) granted a Letter of Permission (LoP) for the admission of 100 MBBS students for the academic session 2023-24 to the new medical college in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi. With this development, the number of government-run MCHs in the state will increase to 11. The construction of the medical college and hospital in Kalahandi has been completed at a cost of Rs 481.06 crore.
