The problem of food poisoning increases monsoon, it can even cause death!

In many parts of the country food poisoning cases are coming to the fore. On Monday, two children died of food poisoning in Surat, while the rest of the family members are undergoing treatment.

A total of 30 students fell ill at Keshavareddy School in Puduru Mandal in Telangana. Parents are apprehensive that the reason for this may be food poisoning. On Monday, symptoms of food poisoning were found in 22 girl students of KGBV School located at Bela, the divisional headquarters of Adilabad district. It is feared that so far this year around 700 students have fallen prey to poor quality food.

Although no one died of direct food poisoning, Shabotu Sanjay Kiran, 18-year-old students of IIIT Basar, Warangal, died during treatment at a hospital on July 26.

Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant, Apollo Hospitals told that while the rains provide much-needed respite from the heat, it also brings with it many health issues. The rains cause a lot of water logging, which becomes the cause of many health concerns.

He said that since the humidity is very high in these months, most of the food spoils quickly. Bacteria, Viruses, and fungi rapidly spread to make food toxic, causing symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, chills, cramps, anorexia, fever, and abdominal pain.

He said that food poisoning and consumption of the contaminated water can cause serious health problems. Gastroenteritis is a common health problem faced by people in this season. Since water is more prone to contamination, diseases like jaundice, vomiting, and diarrhea are also common. In addition, other viruses such COVID-19 can also survive in these conditions, which adds to the problems, Dr Chatterjee said.

Dr Sumit Agarwal, Internal Medicine Specialist, Senior Consultant and General Physician at Sarvodaya Hospital and Research Centre, also agreed, saying, Gastroenteritis is a serious condition in itself, especially if a person is vomiting or having a lot of diarrhea.

Dr Agarwal advises to avoid eating outside food. Don’t eat stall food. Do not drink water of unknown source. Keep your water with you to avoid all water-borne diseases. Eat home cooked, fresh food.

Although food poisoning can be quite a troublesome affair, there are some simple home remedies that can be tried to get relief. Consuming easily available ingredients at home can be useful to calm your stomach problems.
