12 Killed, Hundreds Escape in 2 Jailbreaks in Bangladesh Amid Continuing Violence

At least 12 persons lost their lives during two jailbreaks that happened in Bangladesh during the anarchy that followed the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. According to reports, hundreds of prisoners escaped during these jailbreaks.

Six convicts were killed at Jamapur Prison on Thursday during the jailbreak. The guards fired at the escaping prisoners when the mob of jailed criminals resorted to arson and violence. Five inmates died in the firing while another was stabbed to death.

On Tuesday another six prisoners were shot dead during a mass breakout at a prison in Kashimpur.

The inmates attacked the guards and broke through the jail’s main gate. The army soldiers and jail guards had to open fire.

But over 200 prisoners managed to escape from the Kashimpur High-Security Prison that had some of Bangladesh’s most notorious convicts, including Islamist extremists and murderers.

More than 800 prisoners escaped from a jail in the central district of Narsingdi in July, when a mob attacked it.

On Monday, the day of Hasina’s ouster, more than 500 inmates escaped from a prison in the northern district of Sherpur.
