Android Phones to Have Satellite Connectivity Soon

In recent future the premium Android smartphones will be able to connect to passing satellites to transmit and receive messages in areas without cell coverage. This will be possible because of a new agreement between chip giant Qualcomm and satellite phone company Iridium, reported the BBC.

Satellite connectivity is considered the next frontier for mobile phones. In September 2022, Apple declared that a satellite function will be available in the iPhone 14, enabling the device to send and receive limited receiving text messages via satellites in emergency situations.

Large numbers of Android smartphones use Qualcomm processors. Iridium is the first company to provide satellite phone service. It launched its first satellite into space in 1997. Now it has 75 satellites orbiting the earth that can exchange data with each other.

Qualcomm envisions coming up with a new function known as Snapdragon Satellite. It would be initially available in its premium chips. It means satellite connectivity through smartphones will have a price tag attached to it. In the future, the company plans to provide satellite connectivity facility to tablets, laptops, and possibly cars.
