There are nine nuclear-armed nations in the world. They include the US, Russia, France, China, UK, North Korea, Israel, India and Pakistan.

According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China’s nuclear arsenal increased from 410 warheads in January 2023 to 500 in January 2024. The organization feels that China is continuing to increase its nuclear weapons.

It is estimated that there were 12,121 nuclear warheads in the world in January 2024. Out of them, about 9,585 were in military stockpiles for potential use. An estimated 3,904 of those warheads were deployed with missiles and aircraft and the rest were in central storage, the report said.

The SIPRI said Russia and the US together possess almost 90 per cent of all nuclear weapons.

The report put India’s ‘stored’ nuclear warheads at 172 in January 2024 while the number for Pakistan was 170.
