China got another country’s support

Colombo: China has got the support of another country on the issue of Taiwan. After the support of Russia and Pakistan, now Sri Lanka has supported China. A day after US Senate Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed his commitment to a China policy (One-China-Policy).

In a tweet, the Sri Lankan President said, “In a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Kai Zhenhong, I reiterated Sri Lanka’s Firm commitment to the One China Policy, the principles of the UN Charter on Sovereignty and territorial integrity.” During the meeting with Kai, Wickremesinghe said, countries should avoid any kind of provocation that would further increase global tension.

Sri Lanka is going through its worst financial crisis since independence in 1948. Sri Lanka has to pay off a huge debt from China. In such a situation, it is natural for Sri Lanka to support China. It should be noted that China has strongly opposed the visit of US Senate Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. After Pelosi’s visit, China said it would retaliate with military exercises near Taiwan.
