Indonesian Earthquake Death Toll Reaches 46; Over 700 Hurt

Bali: At least 46 people were killed and over 700 sustained injuries after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake rattled Indonesia’s main island of Java on Monday.

“There are 46 dead people at the Cianjur regional hospital and around 700 injured people,” Govt official sources said.

Apart from this, hundreds of buildings were damaged, including an Islamic boarding school, a hospital, and other public facilities.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.6 earthquake on Monday was centred in the Cianjur region in West Java province at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles). It sent residents in the capital, Jakarta, running to the streets for safety.

Cianjur town is 75km (35 miles) southeast of Jakarta. Footage from Metro TV showed structures in Cianjur reduced almost entirely to rubble as worried residents huddled outside.

Suherman warned the death toll could rise because villagers outside the town may still be trapped.
