Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt In Running To Be Next UK PM

London: Following Liz Truss’s resignation on Thursday, two contenders in Britain’s previous leadership contest this year–Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt are believed to be in the running to become UK’s next prime minister.

Reportedly, UK Prime Minister Liz Truss today said that she is resigning as prime minister, announcing that her successor will be elected by the end of next week.

Truss’s resignation came less than 24 hours after her saying “I am a fighter and not a quitter”.

The moves, aimed at reviving the UK economy, had divided her Conservative Party just 45 days after she was appointed.

“I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability. Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills. Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent. And our country has been held back for too long by low economic growth. I was elected by the Conservative Party with a mandate to change this,” Truss said outside 10 Downing Street in one of her last addresses as the PM. Her husband stood by her side.
