Russia-Ukraine Standoff: Putin Formally Annexes Four Ukrainian Regions Into Russia

Moscow: President Vladimir Putin officially annexed four regions of Ukraine as Russian forces fought to block a Ukrainian counteroffensive across wide portions of the territory, on Tuesday.

Putin signed laws annexing Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions into Russia, marking the largest expansion of Russian territory in at least fifty years.

The admission of these regions into the Russian Federation is addressed in four federal constitutional laws that Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed, according to the lower house of parliament.

After holding what it referred to as referendums in Ukraine’s seized regions, Russia announced the annexations. The action, according to Western nations and Kiev, violated international law and was coerced and unrepresentative.

Not all of the territories being annexed are under Russian military control. Though the precise limits have not yet been determined, Russia’s overall claim covers about 18% of Ukrainian land.

On maps released by the Russian defence ministry on Tuesday, it looked that Russian invading forces had quickly withdrawn from regions in eastern and southern Ukraine where they had been put under intense strain by a Ukrainian counteroffensive action.
