Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has forecasted that by 2050, India, the United States, and China will dominate the global stage as superpowers, creating a “complex world order” that global leaders must be ready to navigate.
In an interview with The Straits Times, Blair emphasised that countries must adjust to a multipolar world, primarily shaped by these three nations. “By mid-century, you will have three superpowers: America, China, and likely India,” he said, urging nations to define their position within this evolving global landscape.
Blair, who led the UK from 1997 to 2007, pointed out that today’s geopolitical environment is significantly more intricate than during his tenure, when the US was the unchallenged global leader. He noted that the rise of China and India is forcing countries to reconsider their alliances and diplomatic strategies. “You will need strong alliances to engage with these superpowers on more equal terms,” he added.
Blair also addressed the increasing tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, warning of the potential for wider escalation. He reiterated his backing for a two-state solution, advocating a future for Gaza that is free from both Israel’s Defence Forces and Hamas.
Blair suggested that China could be instrumental in peace efforts but urged Beijing to moderate its ally, Iran, which he alleged was involved in the planning of Hamas’ recent attack on Israel. He described the assault as “a long time in the making.”
