Andrew Malkinson, who was wrongfully jailed for 17 years in a rape case has been ordered to pay up 100,000 pounds (Rs 1,06,88639) towards “bed and board” costs during his prison stay, reported the BBC.
According to the report, this amount will be deducted from the compensation payments made to the wrongfully jailed man.
Andrew Malkinson spent 17 years in jail after being wrongfully convicted of raping a woman in Salford, Greater Manchester, in 2003.
An amount of 100,000 pounds (Rs 1,06,88639) will be deducted from his compensation amount towards the cost of his prison stay.
A new ruling last year has placed a financial burden on individuals who have already suffered significant injustices.
Malkinson was formally cleared by the Court of Appeal in July 2024.
Malkinson wants the living costs rule removed. He will have to wait at least two years for getting any compensation, as an independent board, which determined how much he was entitled to, made its decision.
A House of Commons library document from 2015 describes compensation as “the exception rather than the rule” in miscarriage of justice cases.
