WATCH: Why Was Nobel Laureate Svaante Paabo Thrown Into The Pond?

Stockholm: Svante Paabo, a Swedish scientist, was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research on the evolution of humans and the genomes of extinct hominins. Mr. Paabo’s coworkers gathered at the Max Planck Institute in Germany to welcome him and commend the Nobel laureate for his outstanding work. The institute shared a video of Mr. Paabo bending to thank his colleague for their action on Twitter and added, “We are extremely pleased and delighted.”

The celebrations did not stop there, nevertheless, as the institute’s members also carried out an antiquated custom of throwing a colleague into the pond to mark their achievement in science. The Nobel Prize’s official Twitter account posted a video of Mr. Paabo’s coworkers throwing him into a pond.

“Our new medicine laureate Svante Pääbo made a splash when his colleagues at @MPI_EVA_Leipzig threw him into a pond. Normally throwing a colleague into the pond happens when somebody receives a PhD, and they wanted to do it for Pääbo’s #NobelPrize as well,” the tweet read.
