Madhumita Shukla Murder Case: SC Declines to Stay Release of Former UP Minister Amarmani Tripathi and Wife

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay the release of former Uttar Pradesh minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani. The couple is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of poet Madhumita Shukla in 2003.

The Uttar Pradesh Prisons Department issued a release order for Amarmani Tripathi based on the state’s 2018 remission policy. The couple has served 16 years in prison and is now eligible for release due to their age (Amarmani is 66 and Madhumani is 61) and good behaviour.

The murder of Madhumita Shukla, a pregnant poet, shocked the nation. She was shot and killed in Lucknow in 2003. Amarmani Tripathi was arrested for the murder and was convicted in 2007. His wife Madhumani was also convicted of the murder.

The couple’s release has been met with protests from the victim’s family and others who believe that they should not be released. The victim’s sister, Nidhi Shukla, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking to block their release.

The Supreme Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government and the Tripathi couple to file their responses to the petition within eight weeks. The court will then decide whether to grant the petition and block the couple’s release.

The release of Amarmani Tripathi and his wife is a controversial decision. Some people believe that they should not be released because they were convicted of a serious crime. Others believe that they should be released because they have served their time and are entitled to a second chance.
