Assam Man Arrested for Backing Bangladesh Unrest; Possible Al-Qaeda Links Probed

Guwahati: A man from Assam’s Haila Kandi district was arrested by local police for allegedly supporting the ongoing unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh through a social media post.

Identified as Rezuwan Ulla Mazarbhuiya, the youth was taken into custody from his residence in Rangpur following a controversial Bengali post expressing solidarity with the Bangladeshi protests.

Mazarbhuiya’s post, which predicted a similar upheaval in Assam, sparked significant concern among authorities. The content also contained references to the militant group Al-Qaeda, prompting a deeper investigation into potential terror links.

Mazarbhuiya is currently under interrogation, facing charges of unlawful activities, criminal conspiracy, and promoting enmity,

Bangladesh has been embroiled in widespread protests since June, triggered by demands for reforms to a government job quota system. The unrest has led to over 400 deaths and the resignation and escape of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was subsequently sworn in as interim head of government, leading a 16-member advisory council that includes key protest leaders.
