Avalanche Strikes J&K’s Sonamarg; No Casualties Reported

Sonamarg: An avalanche hit the Sarbal area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Monday. Fortunately, there were no casualties or financial losses reported as the avalanche struck the forest side of Sonamarg, causing no damage, according to officials.

Visuals depict Project Beacon of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) engaged in a snow-clearing operation at the affected site. Project Beacon, established in the 1960s, is the oldest initiative of the BRO, tasked with developing and maintaining crucial road infrastructure in key Kashmir regions. It plays a vital role in ensuring smooth traffic flow at Zojila Pass, facilitating the Amarnath Yatra tracks, and clearing snow on roads.

In a separate incident, 35 vehicles stranded in the snow at Razdan Top on the Bandipora-Gurez road in Jammu and Kashmir were successfully rescued by a team from the BRO. The vehicles had been stuck due to adverse weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and storms.

Earlier on April 27, Pernote village, situated approximately six kilometres from Ramban town in Jammu and Kashmir, experienced significant damage to roads, houses, and power towers caused by continuous landslides. The affected villagers were relocated to Panchayat Ghar and other designated places, with the administration providing medical assistance and food to those affected.
