Bengaluru: The Karnataka government ordered a seven-day closure of GT World Mall in Bengaluru following allegations that a farmer was denied entry due to his traditional attire. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, sparked widespread condemnation across political lines in the state’s Legislative Assembly.
Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh announced immediate action against the mall, citing the government’s authority to enforce the closure. Social Welfare Minister HC Mahadevappa echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of individual dignity and self-respect.
The controversy arose when 70-year-old Fakeerappa from Haveri district, accompanied by his family, was reportedly turned away by mall security for wearing a dhoti and white shirt. This traditional Karnataka attire was deemed unsuitable for entry, with staff allegedly suggesting he return in trousers.
Assembly Speaker UT Khader called for stringent measures against the mall, regardless of its ownership status.
The incident has reignited discussions on dress codes in private establishments, with some lawmakers suggesting broader action against clubs imposing similar restrictions. Opposition Leader R Ashoka emphasized the need for concrete government orders to prevent future occurrences.
