Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday night arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Station House Officer (SHO) Abhijit Mondal from Tala Police Station. They are charged with negligence in filing the FIR and tampering evidence in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor.
Ghosh, who had previously been detained by the CBI for alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital and underwent a polygraph test, is now under scrutiny for his role in this case.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the immediate suspension of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal following Mondal’s arrest. Adhikari accused the police of evidence tampering and procedural lapses designed to undermine the investigation.
The Calcutta High Court has set a September 17 deadline for the CBI to present a progress report on the ongoing investigation.
The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was discovered in RG Kar Medical College’s seminar hall on August 9, with autopsy results confirming she was raped and murdered. Kolkata Police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy the following day, who reportedly confessed to the crime.
