Cyclone “Mandous” Weakens, Likely To Trigger Heavy Rains Across Tamil Nadu

Chennai: In its most recent weather advisory, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that cyclone Mandous had weakened to a cyclonic storm and lay centred about 180 km Southeast of Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) at 11:30 IST.

It is expected to make landfall between Puducherry and Sriharikota near Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) between December 9 at midnight and early hours of December 10 in a west-northwesterly direction. It will also cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the nearby south AP coast.

The beaches of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh have been placed on orange alert. Teams from the NDRF have been activated.

Further, Chennai airport authorities cancelled several flights due to heavy rains caused by the impending cyclone.

Earlier, Education Minister A Namassivayam had ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in several districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday, December 9, in view of the fact that the impending cyclonic storm “Mandous” is all set to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm.
