Female PhD student Commits Suicide at IIT Kanpur Hostel, 4th Incident In a Year

A 28-year-old female PhD student of IIT Kanpur ended her life by suicide on Thursday. It was the fourth such incident in the last year.

She was pursuing her PhD in Earth Sciences at the IIT Kanpur. She committed suicide inside her hostel room D-116 in hall number-4 during the intervening night.

Her body was recovered on Thursday noon after her hostel mates alerted the authorities.

“A police forensic team has visited the campus to investigate the circumstances of the death. The Institute is awaiting the results of the police investigation to determine the cause. With Pragati Kharya’s passing, the institute has lost a promising young researcher. The institute extends its deepest condolences and prays for strength and comfort to her family and friends in this time of great loss,” IIT Kanpur said in a statement.

Police recovered her body was recovered after breaking open the door of the room. A note was found at the scene in which the student had written that she was responsible for her own death.
