Guru Nanak Jayanti: History, Significance & Important Lesson

The founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on Kartika Purnima (15th Lunar day of Kartika Month). His birthday is celebrated as Guru Nanak Jayanti or Guruparb in the country.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first among the ten Sikh Gurus. He is widely known for his spiritual, political, and social views. His teachings are mostly on the themes of love, kindness, equality, and humanity.

Guru Nanak Ji is said to believe to start ‘langar’ which is a place for the poor and needy. Since his childhood, he always wanted to help the poor. So he started ‘langar’ where voluntarily people can provide food to the poor. Even today, food is provided free of cost in almost every Gurudwaras.

This year Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurpurab is on November 8, 2022, today. It will be observed as the 553rd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

  1. “With your hands carve out your own destiny.”
  2. “Death would not be called bad, O people, if one knew how to truly die.”
  3. “Do not wish evil for others. Do not speak ill of others. Do not obstruct anyone’s activities.”
  4. “Even Kings & emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God.”
  5. “Conquer your mind & conquer the world.”
  6. “Those who have loved are those that have found God.”
  7. “He who has no faith in himself can never have faith in God.”
  8. “Speak only that which will bring you honor.”
  9. “He who regards all men as equals is religious.”
  10. “Let no man in the world live in delusion. Without a Guru none can cross over to the other shore.”
