Gaganyaan Mission: Indian Astronauts to Enjoy Custom-Made Food in Space

New Delhi: As India gears up for its ambitious Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send astronauts into space for the first time, ensuring their safety and well-being is of utmost importance. Along with a robust end-to-end system, providing high-quality food for the astronauts during their journey beyond Earth is crucial for their mission’s success.

According to S Somnath, the Chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the astronauts will be served Indian cuisine during their space missions, and several institutions are working on developing specialized food items and menus tailored for these extraordinary voyages.

During short-duration missions, such as the initial launches, certain food options like Idli Sambar will not be included in the menu. Instead, the astronauts will consume palletized food from tubes, limited to a single type of meal.

However, during long-duration missions, a wider variety of custom-made food, including chicken, will be made available to them. The food provided will be similar to what we consume on Earth, ensuring that the astronauts have a satisfying and nutritious diet.

Addressing the selection process for Indian astronauts, Somnath highlighted that the Indian Air Force plays a vital role as the primary source for astronauts. Being experienced pilots capable of withstanding challenging environments, they are currently undergoing extensive training as astronaut candidates.

“We are designing and developing the module in which they will be seated,” Somnath further mentioned. ISRO has also sought assistance from other space-faring nations that have previously sent astronauts into space, benefiting from their expertise and experience.

Regarding the timeline for the launch of the Gaganyaan mission, Somnath clarified that he is not providing a specific date for the final human mission. The focus remains on taking the necessary steps to reach a point where astronauts can be safely launched into space.

“It is my responsibility to demonstrate to the nation that we are progressing towards that state, and it’s crucial for us to proceed with caution as human lives are involved in sustained manned missions,” Somnath emphasized.
