Kathmandu Mayor Puts ‘Greater Nepal’ Map in Office in Response to ‘Akhand Bharat’ Mural in India’s New Parliament

New Delhi: Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah has put a new ‘Greater Nepal’ map in his office as a counter move against the ‘Akhand Bharat’ mural in the new parliament building of India. Opposition parties in Nepal have also expressed displeasure over the ‘Akhand Bharat’ mural. Nepalese opposition parties, including the CPN-UML, have demanded the government take up the matter with India.

The ‘Greater Nepal’ map in Shah’s office includes areas from East Teesta to West Kangra which are currently Indian territories.

On Thursday, Gagan Thapa, general secretary of the Nepali Congress, said that the country should also officially publish the ‘Greater Nepal’ map.

But Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Wednesday said ‘Akhand Bharat’ map was not a political issue. Speaking in the Nepal National Assembly, Prachanda, said that he had raised the issue during his recently-concluded India visit.

Border disputes continue between Indian and Nepal as Nepal stakes claim over areas of Kalapani, Lipu Lekh and Limpiydhura which are now Indian territories. In 2020 Nepal government issued a new political map incorporating these areas as part of its territory.
