Official, Students Among Several Missing As Boat Carrying 75 Capsizes in Assam

On Thursday in Assam’s Dhubri, a motorized boat carrying about 75 passengers, many of them students, overturned in the Brahmaputra River.

Dhubri (Assam): On Thursday in Assam’s Dhubri, a motorized boat carrying about 75 passengers, many of them students, overturned in the Brahmaputra River.  According to PTI, numerous other people and a top district official are reportedly missing. However, locals stated that 10 motorcycles and approximately 100 individuals were aboard the boat.

Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are working on search and rescue missions.

“This mechanized country boat was meant for carrying goods only. Why the circle officer himself was traveling with so many other passengers is a matter to be probed,” said Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Gyanendra Tripathi, Chief executive officer, Assam SDRF was quoted saying by ANI that “A country-made boat capsized in the Brahmaputra River in Dhubri district. Search and rescue teams have started the operations. More details are awaited.”
