Rahul Gandhi to Deliver Opening Speech in No-Confidence Motion Tomorrow: Reports

New Delhi: Congress MP, Rahul Gandhi, is expected to deliver the opening speech for the no-confidence motion against the Modi government in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, as per reports. Gandhi’s return to Parliament follows the Supreme Court’s stay on his conviction in the Modi surname case, leading to his reinstatement as the Wayanad MP.

The opposition INDIA bloc welcomed Gandhi back to Parliament and celebrated his victory in the Modi surname case. Upon his arrival, Gandhi paid respects to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and participated in the Lok Sabha proceedings, which were later adjourned due to a commotion.

Earlier on August 4, the Supreme Court had stayed Gandhi’s conviction in a criminal defamation case related to his 2019 remark where he had quipped, “How do all thieves have Modi as their surname?” This case, filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi, had led to Gandhi’s disqualification as an MP and a two-year imprisonment sentence.

Gandhi’s return is seen as a significant boost for the opposition INDIA bloc, especially as the Lok Sabha is set to witness the no-confidence motion against the Modi government on August 8 and 9. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the house on August 10, and may also make a statement on the Manipur violence during that time.
