Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates Sittwe Port in Myanmar

Naypyidaw: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Admiral Tin Aung San, the Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport and Communications of Myanmar, jointly inaugurated the Sittwe Port in Rakhine State on Tuesday.

They welcomed the first Indian cargo ship on this occasion, which sailed from Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. Sittwe Port’s opening would boost cross-border and regional trade while also boosting Rakhine State’s local economy. The Port’s improved connectivity will increase the region’s growth potential and create job opportunities.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal spoke at the event and emphasised the close historical, cultural, and economic relations between India and Myanmar. He reaffirmed India’s long-standing commitment to the welfare and development of the people of Myanmar through projects like the Sittwe Port.

This Port was created as part of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, which was supported with grant funding from the Indian government. The KMTTP’s waterway and road components will connect India’s east coast to the north-eastern states via the Sittwe port once completely operational.
