10 Yr Jail for Lakshadweep MP in Attempt to Murder Case

New Delhi: Mohammad Faizal, Lok Sabha MP from Lakshadweep was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in an attempt to murder case on Wednesday.

His two brothers and another man were also sent to jail by District and Sessions Court in Kavaratti in Lakshadweep in the same case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on the convicts.

The case is related to a scuffle during the 2009 Lok Sabha election campaign. Congress leader Mohammed Salleh who was also the son-in-law of Congress veteran P.M.Sayeed was lethally attacked by a group of people.

Faizal, his brothers, and several others were alleged to have taken part in this attack.

Following the lethal attack, seriously injured Salleh was airlifted to a private hospital in Kochi for treatment.

This jail sentence can jeopardize the political career of Faizal as the punishment exceeds two years. He can get respite by challenging this verdict in the Kerala High Court and get a relief.
