1st G20 Energy Transition Working Group Meeting Kicks Off in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The First G-20 Energy Transition Working Group meeting was inaugurated in Bengaluru today, February 5, in the presence of Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy R K Singh and Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines Prahlad Joshi.

The Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy R K Singh stressed the need to expand the discourse of the G20 Energy Transition Working Group.

Addressing media persons in Bengaluru on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Transition Working Group meeting, the minister said that unless we expand the discourse of the Working group, the concerns of the developing world cannot be addressed. He said the delegation from the G20 Working group was asked to address these concerns related to the technology gap and finance supply needed for the energy transition.

Saying that six to seven hundred million people in developing countries are still deprived of energy security, the minister said unless these people are given access to clean energy at affordable cost, they will not shift to green energy. He pointed out the need to create storage space for renewable energy. He also stressed on the need to address the supply chain saying that we need to create multiple sources to procure material for augmenting renewable energy projects.

However, in India, the initiatives taken by the Government have helped provide electricity to most of the population. India today is one of the top five developing economies that have made significant progress in the capacity building of renewable energy and emission containment measures.

The priority areas of the ETWG meeting include Energy Transition through Addressing Technology Gaps; Low-cost Financing for Energy Transition;  Energy Security and Diversified Supply Chains; Energy Efficiency, Industrial Low Carbon Transitions and Responsible Consumption;  Fuels for the Future (3F) and Universal Access to Clean Energy and Just, Affordable, and Inclusive Energy Transition Pathways.

The first G-20 Energy Transition Working Group meeting under India’s Presidency is held in Bengaluru from the 5th to the 7th of February. The delegates from G-20 countries and guest countries are part of the Working Group.
