New Delhi: Two hundred Indian fishermen imprisoned by Pak authorities were released from Pakistan jails and were handed over to BSF authorities at the Joint Check Post at the Attari-Wagah border.
These fishermen crossed over to India at around 1 am using ‘Emergency Travel Certificate’ issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The fishermen were arrested by Pak authorities when their boats allegedly entered Pakistan region through territorial waters in the Arabian Sea.
A team of Indian doctors checked up their health following their repatriation. After stepping on Indian soil, the fishermen bowed and kissed their motherland.
Fishermen are frequently arrested and their boats seized by both India and Pakistan as the maritime border in the Arabian Sea is poorly defined. Most fishing boats do not have instruments to ascertain their precise locations.
