35.5% Indians Suffer Hypertension, 11.4% Diabetic: Lancet Survey Report

New Delhi: Around 11.4 per cent of Indians are diabetic, while 35.5 per cent of Indians suffer from hypertension, reveals a survey report published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal.

Madras Diabetes Research Foundation conducted this survey in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and some other institutes.

Another important fact related to diabetes and hypertension revealed by this survey is that 39.5 per cent people in India suffer from abdominal obesity, while 28.6 Indians have generalized obesity.

This survey is based on information collected from 1,13,043 respondents (33,537 urban and 79,506 rural residents), in 31 states and Union Territories in the country, between 2008 and 2020.

The survey also showed that 15.3 per cent of people have pre-diabetes symptoms. An alarming 81.2 per cent have dyslipidaemia or an imbalance of lipids.
