9 More Injured in Exchange of Fire in Manipur, 1 Militant Killed

Imphal: Nine more people were injured in an exchange of fire between village volunteers and militants in the Khamenlok area in the Imphal East district of Manipur. As per reports, this gunfight continued till late on Monday night. , police said.

The village volunteers destroyed some makeshift bunkers and a watchtower of militants in this area that is at the borders of the Meitei-dominated Imphal East district and tribal-majority Kangpokpi district.

Extra security forces were sent to the area to prevent the escalation of violence.

In another incident in Govindpur village in Bishnupur district, a militant was killed and two others were injured in a gun battle with security forces. This exchange of fire occurred while the militants building bunkers around villages were stopped by the security forces.

Till now at least 100 people have died in the ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. Curfew remains in force in 11 of the 16 districts of Manipur, while internet services remain suspended.
