B.B. Lal, who discovered the evidence of Lord Ram’s birthplace passes away at age of 101

New Delhi, 10.9: Former Director General of Archaeological Survey of India Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan Professor Dr. B.B. Lal passed away on Saturday. He was 101 years old at the time of his death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over his death. B.B. Lal was considered to be the most senior archaeologist in India. He was active in archaeological research and writing until his death. His full name is Braj Basi Lal.

B.B. Lal was born on May 2, 1921, in Badora village of Jhansi district. He began his career as the Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. In 2000, B.B. Lal was awarded the Padma Bhushan. After this, he was honored with Padma Bhushan in 2021.

B.B. Lal worked extensively on the Mahabharata and Ramayana as well as in areas related to the Indus Civilization and Kalibangan. Several books and hundreds of research papers have been published related to his work. Bibi Lal was the Director of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1968 to 1972. Apart from this, he was also involved in various committees of UNESCO. In 1944, Sir Mortimer Wheeler trained him in Taxila. He found evidence of Ram’s birthplace. In 1975, he started the project of archeology of Ramayana sites. It was funded by the Archaeological Survey of India, Jiwaji University, Gwalior, and the Department of Archaeology, Government of Uttar Pradesh. The project was launched on 31 March 1975 in Ayodhya. During this period, places like Ayodhya, Bharadwaj Ashram, Nandigram, Chitrakoot, and Shringvoberpur were inspected. Based on this research, the issue of having a Ram temple in Ayodhya was established.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted condoling the death of Bibi Lal. In it, he wrote that B.B. Lal is a wonderful personality. His contribution to the field of culture and archeology is unique. He will be remembered as a spiritual figure who had a deep connection with our rich past.
