Rayagada: The carcass of a female elephant was found in the Chimpapur area under the Gunupur Forest Range in Rayagada district on Tuesday night.
It is suspected that the elephant may have died due to electrocution.
According to forest officials, this elephant from the Kotraguda jungle in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh had entered the Rayagada district along with another elephant. Both of them were roaming in the Gunupur forest range for some time.
According to reports, four elephants from the same herd had earlier died due to electrocution in 2023.
On Tuesday night, the two elephants had wandered into a kapok fence near Chimpapur and tried to break an electric pole. It is suspected that during the process the female elephant came in contact with a live wire and was electrocuted.
The forest officials have launched an investigation into the incident.
