China Admits 60,000 COVID Deaths in a Month; Most Victims are the Aged

At last, China has shown up the reality of the recent COVID pandemic in the country. It admitted that nearly 60,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus had occurred in the country in about a month after lifting of the strict “zero Covid” policy.

China recorded 59,938 Covid-related deaths from Dec. 8 to Jan. 12, declared China’s National Health Commission. Out of them, 56.5 percent were in their 80s.

Before this massive revelation of deaths, China had reported a total of just 5,241 Covid deaths since the pandemic began in the city of Wuhan in 2019. Experts say this hints that till now China had suppressed the real COVID death toll in the country.

China faced criticism from other countries as well as the WHO for suppressing data about the extent of its Covid outbreak and deaths related to it.

In recent weeks, China’s hospitals, morgues, and funeral homes have overflowed because of COVID’s recent wrath.

Earlier China claimed that only 37 people had died of COVID since Dec. 7, the day the “zero Covid” policy was lifted.
