Elephant Calf Rescued from Canal After Intense Operation in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj

Mayurbhanj: In a heartwarming incident on Wednesday, forest officials, with the help of local villagers successfully rescued an elephant calf trapped in a canal in Asanbani village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. The four-hour operation showcased the dedication of wildlife conservationists and the community’s commitment to animal welfare.

The drama unfolded when a herd of elephants, foraging for food, ventured into the village. The young calf accidentally fell into a canal, prompting its mother to attempt a rescue. Despite her efforts, the baby elephant remained stuck, causing distress to both animals.

Alerted by the mother’s cries, villagers contacted the Forest Department and the Gajasathi team. Officials strategically waited for the mother to move away before initiating the rescue. A JCB machine was employed, though the protective mother elephant’s aggression posed challenges.

The rescue team’s persistence paid off as they safely extracted the calf from the canal. Following the reunion, the elephant pair retreated into the nearby forest.
