Eviction Notice to Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen: Mamata Banerjee Calls for Protest

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directed the state ministers to begin a protest dharna outside Nobel laureate Amartya Sen’s house in Santiniketan to protest against the Visva-Bharati’s eviction notice.

On Tuesday, during a cabinet meeting, she asked MSME Minister Chandranath Sinha, the local MLA, to lead the protest. State Education Minister Bratya Basu and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim will also join the agitation.

Bauls and other folk artists are to be involved in this demonstration. Various cultural programs will be organized at the spot, she informed the ministers. Singer Kabir Suman and painter Subhaprasanna will take part in this protest demonstration on May 6 and 7.

The CM advised her ministers not to move an inch even if Visva-Bharati sends bulldozers to take possession of Amartya Sen’s house.

Visva-Bharati had sent an eviction notice to Amartya Sen on April 19, asking him to vacate 13 decimals of the 1.38 acres of land of his residence by May 6.
