First Underwater Test Run of Kolkata Metro Below the Ganga River

Kolkata: A trial run of India’s first-ever underwater metro train with passengers was conducted on Thursday. As part of the test run, Kolkata’s East-West Metro successfully completed the journey from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade and vice versa. This metro rail journey was under the holy Ganga River of east-west metro corridor.

The train started from Howrah Maidan metro station and after crossing the three stations, it reached the Esplanade. Now the underwater metro tunnel connects twin cities Howrah and Kolkata, which were earlier separated by the river Ganga. The route between Howrah metro station and Mahakaran is underwater beneath the Holy Ganga River. The tunnel beneath the Ganga River is about 35 meters below.

As per Metro Rail, this line may start its operation for the general public in October or November of 2023. It will provide a comfortable and fast journey from Howrah to Esplanade.

This green metro line will be joined with Esplanade and Sealdah later. The tunnel beneath the Ganga River is about 35 meters below.
