Frequent Parole to Ram Rahim; Chandigarh HC Issues Notice to Haryana Govt

Chandigarh: A public interest litigation (PIL) seeking restriction on the future release of rape convict self-proclaimed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on parole was heard by Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday. A division bench of the High Court issued notice to Haryana and others regarding the case.

This PIL seeking a curb on frequent parole granted to Ram Rahim was filed by Lawyers for Human Rights International. The PIL alleged that Gurmeet Ram Rahim misused his concession of parole and committed serious offence under Section 295-A.

As per the PIL, this convicted godman organised an online religious congregation to gather up lakhs of followers at one of his deras near Bathinda.

The PIL contended that his further release on parole is not in the public interest as per Section 8 of the Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act and granting him parole violated an earlier Supreme Court judgment that states those who are habitual offenders and may have the tendency to become a threat to the law and order should not be released on parole.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year jail term in prison in Rohtak on charges of raping two women. He was granted parole several times since 2020. He was last granted a 40-day parole on January 20, 2023.
