“I eat beef too, No Restriction on eating Beef in State”: Meghalaya BJP Chief

While Meghalaya Assembly elections are a few days away, the state BJP chief Ernest Mawrie came up with an explosive statement that he eats beef and there is no restriction on beef consumption in the state. This has put the cow-vigilante lobby in the BJP in an awkward position. The neighbouring BJP-ruled Assam has passed a bill to regulate cattle slaughter, transport and sale of beef.

On Wednesday, Meghalaya’s BJP president Ernest Mawrie said that the state will not impose any restriction on eating beef. “I cannot make a statement on the resolution adopted by other states. We are in Meghalaya, everybody eats beef, and there is no restriction. Yes, I eat beef too,” he said.

“There is no ban in Meghalaya. It is the lifestyle of the people, no one can stop it. There is no such rule in India also. Some states have passed some acts. In Meghalaya, we have a slaughterhouse, everybody takes a cow or pig and brings it to the market. It could be a hygienic one. So the people they have the habit,” the Meghalaya BJP head said.

Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction has slammed BJP over this statement of its Meghalaya chief saying this shows the double standard of the BJP.
