Kharagpur: The semi-decomposed body of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur student was reportedly recovered from his hostel room, on Friday.

The student, identified as Faizan Ahmed (23), is suspected by police to have committed suicide.

Authorities from IIT Kharagpur report that Ahmed was a resident of Tinsukia in Assam and had recently moved into the hostel.

Expressing empathy, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Deeply pained by the unfortunate death of Faizan Ahmed, a bright young student from Tinsukia studying at the prestigious IIT Kharagpur. My condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”

Ahmed was a third-year student at IIT Kharagpur studying mechanical engineering. His passing has been reported to his family.

The campuses of India’s foremost science and technology institute have recently been shocked by a number of suicide fatalities. Two IIT students were discovered dead last month on two different campuses.

A student was discovered dead on September 15 at IIT Madras, possibly by suicide. The student was enrolled in the fourth year of the Aerospace Engineering programme. There was no suicide note found.

Another IIT Guwahati student was discovered dead in his hostel room on September 17; this incident is yet again believed to have been a suicide. The student had been identified as Surya Narayan Premkishore, a native of Kerala, according to police officials. He was a design faculty student.

Two suicides were recorded in two days from the IIT campuses in Hyderabad and Kanpur in September alone.

A 22-year-old engineer was found dead in the IIT Madras hockey stadium in July of this year. Initial investigations determined that he committed suicide. He had left a note indicating he was unable to handle his duties while employed as a project engineer at IIT Madras, according to the police.
