Mumbai: INS Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari Class submarines, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Monday. This India-made submarine will strengthen the capabilities of the Indian Navy.

Commissioning of this state-of-the-art modern submarine comes at a time when the Indian Ocean is threatened by the increased presence of the Chinese Navy.

It was commissioned by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar. This submarine was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited here with technology transfer from France.

According to Indian Navy, “The submarine will boost the Indian Navy’s capability to further India’s maritime interests in deterring the enemy, and conducting Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) to provide decisive blow in times of crisis.”

Marine commandoes can use INS Vagir to launch special operations. Its powerful diesel engines can quickly charge batteries for a stealth mission. For self defence this submarine has state of the art torpedo decoy system, the Navy release said.
