Indian Air Force Day: IAF’s History and Significance

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force was officially established on October 8, 1932, as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire which honored India’s aviation service during World War II with the prefix Royal. Its first aircraft came into being on April 1, 1933, with 6 RAF-trained officers and 19 Air Soldiers.

Today, the Indian Air Force has completed its 90 years of establishment. The Indian Air Force will put up a dazzling show with a range of aircraft during its air show as part of its 90th-anniversaryth anniversary celebrations on October 8. It is for the first time that the IAF decided to hold its annual Air Force Day parade and fly-past outside the Delhi NCR.

Nearly 80 military aircraft and helicopters will be participating in the Air Force Day fly-past on October 8 at the Sukhna Lake complex here, officials said.

The day aims to pay tribute to the Air Force of India and acknowledge their contribution to a successful nation. The Air Force was officially raised as the supporting force of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom in 1932 and the first operational squadron was created in 1933.

Since 1950, the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighboring Pakistan. Other major operations undertaken by the IAF include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus, and Operation Poomalai. The IAF’s mission expands beyond engagement with hostile forces, with the IAF participating in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
