Indian Embassy in Kathmandu Celebrates International Year of Millets 2023

Kathmandu (Nepal): The Embassy of India, Kathmandu celebrated the International Year of Millets (IYM) – 2023 on 18 March 2023 by live-streaming the inauguration of the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference in New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The event held at the Indian Embassy was attended by distinguished guests, including members from the Indian community, friends of India, Agriculture secretary of Nepal Shree Madhu Marasini and FAO Representative Ken Shimizu as well as people from the agricultural sector industry.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets on 5 March 2021, with the aim to raise awareness about the importance of millets for food security, nutrition, and climate resilience.

The Government of India has adopted a multi-stakeholder engagement approach to make IYM 2023 a people’s movement, positioning India as the ‘Global Hub of Millets’ through year-long national and global campaigns and activities.

Following the live-streaming, a millets-based lunch was served to the attendees, showcasing the versatility and nutritional benefits of millets in various culinary preparations.

The Government of India through its Embassy in Kathmandu remains committed to fostering stronger ties between India and Nepal through such meaningful initiatives and promoting sustainable agricultural practices for a healthier, greener future.
