Karanjia Tehsildar Arrested While Taking Rs 12 lakh Bribe in Cheque; Highest Bribe Amount in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance officials arrested the Karanjia tehsildar Charles Nayak in the Mayurbhanj district on Monday on the charge of acceptance of Rs 12 lakh bribe from a complainant in cheques. According to the state vigilance department, it was the first case of receiving a bribe by cheque in Odisha. Added to it, it also set a new record for the highest bribe amount in a case in the state. Earlier, it was Rs 10 lakh in the Manasi Jena case.

The accused tehsildar accepted the bribe amount from the complainant to release the land acquisition award of Rs.51,75,810. The Tahsildar demanded the bribe amount in the form of two cheques of Rs 10 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, in order to release the compensation cheque of the complainant.

After handing over and presentation of cheques in the bank for withdrawal of the bribe amount, the complainant reported the matter to vigilance for legal action, a statement of the Vigilance Directorate said on Monday.

In May 2022, Odisha Vigilance arrested Manasi Jena, a former inspector in the vigilance directorate demanding and accepting Rs 10 lakh bribe.
