Kerala Boat Tragedy: Death Toll Climbs to 22 After, Rescue Op Restarts

Malappuram: The death toll rise to 22  after a recreational boat capsized in the Purapuzha River at Thooval Theeram tourist spot in Tanur in Kerala’s Malappuram district.

Only 12 of the victims have been identified so far.  The deceased are, Asna (18), Safna (7), Fatima Minha (12), Siddique (35), Jalasiya Jabir (40), Aflah (7), Faisal (3), Anshid and Rasheena.

Reportedly, the incident took place at around 7 pm and a rescue operation is still underway. A 21-member NDRF and fire force team has begun search operations at 6:00 AM on Monday.

Authorities are worried that the toll could go up as the double-decker boat was carrying nearly 40 passengers.

As per the information available at present, around 20 people have been rescued so far. The rescued people were rushed to nearby hospitals.
