Living Man Declared Dead to Dupe Crores from LIC; 3 Arrested in Mumbai

Mumbai: Three persons were arrested by police in Mumbai for attempting to cheat a life insurance firm of crores of rupees by declaring a living man ‘dead’.

The arrested accused persons were Dinesh Taksale, Anil Latke and Vijay Malvade.

On February 21, 2023, based on the complaint lodged by a LIC officer Omprakash Sahu, a case was registered under sections 465, 467, 468, 479, 420, 120 (B), and 511 of the IPC in a Mumbai police station.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Dinesh Taksale had taken a policy of Rs 2 crore from LIC on April 21, 2015. Dinesh deposited the premium on time for about a year. On March 14, 2017, the other two persons arrested in this case, applied for an insurance claim stating that Dinesh died in a road accident on December 25, 2016, in Belwandi police station area of Pune.

As a huge insurance amount of Rs 2 crore had to be paid up, LIC started its own investigation. After almost 6 years of investigation, LIC authorities were surprised to find that Dinesh had not died.

It was also found that the documents submitted by Dinesh to buy the LIC’s policy were also fake. In his application to take the LIC policy, Dinesh had claimed that his annual income was Rs 35 lakh per annum. He also added that he also ran a mess, that gave him Rs 7-8 lakh earning in a year.
