PM Modi Expresses Concern over Brazil Political Violence; extends support to Brazil’s new Prez

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that he was “deeply concerned” about recent developments in Brazil.  Taking to Twitter, PM Modi extended his support to the Brazilian government led by newly installed President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

“Deeply concerned about the news of rioting and vandalism against the State institutions in Brasilia. Democratic traditions must be respected by everyone. We extend our full support to the Brazilian authorities,” PM Modi tweeted. He tagged Brazil’s President Silva to his tweet.

Brazil’s rightist opposition leader Bolsonaro’s supporters on Sunday night entered and defaced Brazil’s presidential palace, and Congress building, and also ransacked ceremonial rooms in the Supreme Court in the capital Brasilia. President Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in a runoff election on October 30, took the oath of office about a week back.

But Bolsonaro and his supporters have not accepted defeat. They challenge the election results.

PM Modi was among world leaders who condemned the incident. US President Joe Biden also termed the events in Brazil as an “assault on democracy and on the peaceful transfer of power.”
