Road Blockade, Arson in Kolkata Following Discovery of body of 7-Yr-Old Girl in a Sack

Kolkata: Discovery of the body of a seven-year-old girl packed inside a gunny sack in a flat near her home in Tiljala in south Kolkata triggered tension in the city. An angry mob torched a police jeep and disrupted road and rail movement. Protestors took to the streets in Kolkata over the death of this seven-year-old girl.

The victim went missing on Sunday morning. Police have arrested her neighbour and the body has been sent for autopsy. The motive behind this crime is yet to be ascertained.

The protesters blamed the delay in police action as the reason behind the girl’s death. They demanded strict action against those involved. A police vehicle was set on fire on a prominent flyover of the city. Several other police vehicles were damaged by the protesters last night.

Kolkata police have detained three persons, including a woman, for their alleged involvement in the vandalism.

From Monday morning, protesters blocked several roads in Tiljala demanding police release the detained persons. They also blocked the arterial road, Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, and railway tracks in the south Sealdah station.

Riot control personnel were to be used to bring back road and rail traffic movement to normal. In some places, protestors pelted stones at the policemen.
